Liverpool and Lyon are clashing in Geneve, in one of their last preseason tests before the competitive part of the season starts. Expect an interesting and exciting matchup, because both sides like to play open and offensive. Liverpool hasn’t been playing very well recently, and Klopp’s unit is eager to improve that impression. Meanwhile, Lyon is still oscillating, but they will sure try to bring down the European champion.

The Reds are not very shiny since the start of the preparations. Yes, they lack several key players, but that can’t be an excuse for not winning a single friendly up until this point. After four matches their record is three defeats (vs Dortmund, Sevilla, and Napoli) and a draw (vs Sporting CP). But what is the most concerning thing from these contests is the fact that the defensive line is way below the expected level. L’Pool allowed 10 goals in these four tests, which is unacceptable for one European champion. Against Napoli, they were playing with all four starting defenders, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson, and Alexander-Arnold, so there isn’t a possibility to say that they lacked some of the names. Klopp recently stated that his team has some problems and that he expects them to be solved before the FA Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup. Regarding the efficiency of the games they play, it is still high, and all four friendlies ended with over 2.5 goals. Three saw both teams scoring and over 3.5 goals, meaning that Liverpool kept the exact same style of play as in the previous years.

Lyon lost the opening two friendly matches, against Genoa and Servette, but defeated Arsenal at the Emirates Cup after that. Sylvinho’s boys managed to turn the result after trailing 1-0 at the halftime. Young forward Moussa Dembele who came off the bench, scored twice in the span of 9 minutes, indicating that Lyon has a huge talent in its squad once again. The former Celtic player is expected to explode this year, and to showcase his potential, which was once among biggest in Europe. Lyon, too, plays very attractive and efficient games. It is their trademark over the past two decades and maybe even longer. Even though they sold Nabil Fekir, the Kids as the fans call them, have several youngsters just waiting to fill in his spot and make a name of their own. All three friendlies they had saw both sides scoring and over 2.5 goals.

Team News

Roberto Firmino, Sadio Made, and Mohamed Salah are expected to miss this match and to rest. According to some pieces of information, Mane will be joining the club next Monday.

Prediction

We will be pretty straightforward here and recommend betting on goals. A lot of them. When such teams meet, it is logical to expect high efficiency, and we are going to back that up. Over 2.5 goals seem fine, and despite the fact that odds on this are not high, if you want a safe bet, this is the pick of the day. Bet365 offers odds at 3/5, and we will take them.

The second tip will be a bit riskier. Having in mind that Liverpool’s defence isn’t working good lately and that Lyon’s attack can do a lot of damage, the French side will score here. Meanwhile, the Reds attack is lethal as always, regardless of all the absences. We could use that and invest our money on both teams to score and over 3.5 goals. If you check the previous results of these clubs, it is something usual.
